Now Starts Now

You have probably said it to yourself at least once this summer: After this is done, I will take care of myself. After the trip. After the move. After the kids are settled. After this one last thing on the list.

I say it too. I have a gym membership I keep promising myself I will actually use once things slow down. They have not slowed down yet. The membership is still waiting for a version of my schedule that has not arrived.

Here is the thing about that promise: There is always a next thing. The list does not run out. It just changes shape.

August 15th is National Relaxation Day, which is a slightly funny thing to put on a calendar. As if the body waits for a date before it is allowed to rest. As if you could schedule presence the way you schedule a dentist appointment.

Your body has not been waiting for August 15th. It has been keeping score all summer. Every time you told yourself you would deal with it later, your back, your shoulders, and your hips noted it and moved on—the same way you did.

Here is what nobody tells you about all those promised someday moments: They depend on a body that is willing and able to show up for them. The trip you are planning, the family you can’t wait to visit, the projects you have lined up for fall—all of it requires a body that is not too tired, too stiff, or too sore to actually be present for any of it.

You cannot be in the moment if your body keeps pulling you out of it.

So here is a different idea for August 15th: Give your body five minutes today. Not after the list is done. Not after the next thing. Today. While the list is still there, because the list is always going to be there.

Those five minutes aren’t about sitting somewhere with your eyes closed, hoping for a little peace before your mind—or something else—interrupts you. That is not recovery. That is just holding still.

Real relief is fifteen or twenty minutes in the right chair. The lights down. Sound that gives your mind somewhere to rest. Your body is finally allowed to stop bracing. And in that last minute before you get up, a breath that lets you notice how different you feel and remember why you made the time.

It does double duty. Your body gets what it actually needs. And because it does, you show up better for everyone waiting on the other side of those few minutes. It does not take you away from anyone else. It makes you more connected to all of it.

There is no waiting for the right moment, because there is no such thing as the right moment. There is only now.

Now starts now.

P.S. This August marks 43 years of Relax The Back helping people feel better in their own bodies. Forty-three years of someday moments turned into today moments.
