LIFEFORM®

Most people buy an office chair. Almost nobody builds a workstation. We'll walk you through it in three moves — in the order that actually matters.
The workday doesn't hurt everyone the same way. Find yours below — it tells you which of the three steps will move the needle fastest for you.
Aching from the belt line down. Usually a seat-depth and lumbar-support problem long before it is a "bad back" problem.
Shop chairs →Tension creeping up from the shoulder blades. Almost always screen height and armrest position doing the damage.
Shop accessories →Numbness, or a hot line down the leg. Seat-edge pressure and a fixed hip angle are the usual suspects — motion is the fix.
Shop desks →Swelling, restlessness, feet that never quite reach the floor. The cheapest fix on this page, and often the most felt.
Shop footrests →Every chair here adjusts to a body, not an average. Seat depth, lumbar height, arm width, recline tension — the things that stop mattering once they're right.

Not sure which fits your frame? A specialist will measure and adjust one for you in about ten minutes.
Ergonomics is not a feature list. It is five places where your body meets furniture. Get all five right and the chair disappears — which is the whole point. Hover or tap a point to see what we look for.

Headrest meets the base of the skull, not the shoulders. Ears stack over shoulders so the neck stops holding the head up.
Support should land in the small of the back and move with you when you recline. Fixed lumbar is the most common miss.
Elbows at roughly 90°, shoulders down. Armrests carry the arms so the trapezius doesn't.
Two fingers of clearance behind the knee, hips slightly above knees. That open angle is what protects the lumbar spine.
Flat and fully supported. If they dangle, the seat edge takes the load — and that's exactly what Step 03 solves.
You've fixed the position. Now fix the fact that you hold it for eight hours. No single posture is safe that long — the win in Step 02 is motion, not another perfect angle.
Average time a desk worker spends seated on a workday — more than they spend asleep.
The interval most ergonomists recommend for changing posture. A sit-stand desk makes it a button press.
The year Relax The Back opened. Four decades of fitting people to furniture, not the reverse.
Locations nationwide where you can sit in the chair before you commit to it.
Set it once to your seated elbow height, save a standing preset, and let the desk do the changing for you.

ErgoAV

Sustainably harvested North American hardwood on a dual-motor lift. The desk you specify once and keep for twenty years — not the one you replace in three.
Feet supported, screen at eye level, keyboard where your elbows already are, light that isn't fighting you. Under $500 typically finishes a setup — and it's the part people mention first when they describe the difference.

This is what a finished setup looks like — each piece doing a job the others can't.

Step 01 · The Chair
Hip angle, lumbar contact and seat depth — the foundation everything else is measured from.

Step 02 · The Desk
Sized to your seated elbow height, with a standing preset so changing position costs you nothing.

Step 03 · The Details
Grounded feet, screen at eye level, wrists neutral. The cheapest part of the build, and the most noticed.
Three ways to buy an office chair. Only one of them lets you try it, get fitted for it, and call a human who knows the product afterwards.

Absolutely love this chair
“I have been working from home for the past seven years and have went through three office chairs. The most recent chair I had has caused me lower back pain. When I went to relax the back and sat in this humanscale diffrient chair I couldn't believe how comfortable it was… My back has already improved noticeably since using this chair.”

Loved this product
“I work on my laptop alot, on the couch, in bed, at Starbucks but over the year I developed this really bad pain in my neck. Once I got this chair I was able to work all day without any neck issues. Really was a game changer and I have been using it for 5 years now and it still works perfect.”

Stable and works great
“This holds my laptop with no problems… The base is fairly heavy keeping the stand stable. The stand also goes high enough so that I can use it standing when I want. The wireless phone charger works great and keeps my phone handy.”

Well built and versatile!
“I wasn't sure if this was going to meet my needs, but I found that I could combine 3 of the 4 “arm” pieces for a longer/higher position that I preferred for my ipad… VERY happy with this product and wish I would have purchased sooner.”

Know what you want already? Step 01 is where the biggest change lives. Everything else builds on it.
Shop Office ChairsNo — and most people don't do it at once. The order is what matters, not the total. If you only change one thing, change the chair: it's the position you hold longest. A very common path is a good chair plus a footrest first, then the desk a few months later once you know what you're missing. A specialist will tell you honestly where your money does the most work.
Height and seat depth do most of the work. As a rule, you want two to three fingers of clearance between the seat edge and the back of your knee, feet flat on the floor, and hips level with or slightly above your knees. Our product pages list seat dimensions and supported height ranges — and if you'd rather not guess, a specialist in any store will measure and adjust one for you in about ten minutes.
Yes — that's the main reason to use a specialty retailer for something you'll sit in for thousands of hours. Relax The Back has over 60 locations with floor models you can sit in, recline in and have adjusted to your body. Check which models are on the floor near you before you drive over.
Yes. Special financing is available through the Synchrony HOME™ credit card on qualifying purchases, including promotional no-interest periods. Terms, approval and promotional length depend on the offer running at the time.
Shipping is free on qualifying orders. Larger furniture — executive chairs, hardwood sit-stand desks, full workstations — is eligible for white-glove delivery and assembly in many areas, meaning it arrives assembled and placed where you want it. Availability and cost depend on the product and your zip code.
Products can be returned within the stated return window in new, unused condition with original packaging; some categories and custom-configured items (made-to-order hardwood desks, for example) have different terms. Check before ordering a custom build — and if you bought in store, your store can help you sort it out directly.
The chairs on this page are built for a decade or more of daily use, which is why the warranties are long — many of our brands warrant frames and mechanisms for 10 to 15 years. That's the real cost comparison: a $1,900 chair over twelve years is cheaper per year than a $400 chair replaced every three, and considerably better for your back in the meantime.

Roughly a decade of working life, sitting in whatever you happen to own. Ten minutes with a specialist is a reasonable price for getting the next ten years right.
